Potholes on the road of ministry

By: Brooke Helder, Content Creator, GACX

Born and raised in Michigan, potholes are no stranger to me. The bumpy, uncomfortable ride over a road riddled with potholes always makes me cringe as I imagine its detrimental effect on my truck. But what if a pothole-covered road could be the setting for the rededication of a person’s life to Jesus?

For 40 years, In Touch Ministries has taught the Bible through radio and television. It distributes media and resources, including radio/television programs, podcasts, articles, and books, with the goal of spreading the Gospel message and helping people grow in their faith.

This new member of GACX has a strong commitment to collaboration. In Touch regularly works with partners to translate In Touch’s content into heart languages and make its resources accessible. For example, In Touch Ministries has partnered with MegaVoice, another member of GACX, to provide Scriptures and discipleship training content in various heart languages on the solar-powered audio players that MegaVoice distributes.

On one trip, Ella Mbogo Waindi, Executive Director of Global Outreach at In Touch, and her team were on a ministry trip in Kenya. It was a long day, and the team was tired. They had just started the two-hour journey back to their home base. The road was covered in potholes, making the drive even more tedious and uncomfortable.

As the journey dragged on, the team started a conversation with their driver. They gave him one of MegaVoice’s players with InTouch’s content on it, which had been translated into the driver’s heart language. After listening to it for the rest of the trip, the driver pulled the car over and began to cry. He explained to the team that God had spoken to him as he listened to the Bible and the discipleship content. He heard what it meant to be a believer, to engage with a local church, and to pray. The driver poured out his heart to the team and rededicated his life to Jesus.

“It was one of those moments when you are so thankful for collaboration. We were in Kenya because of some partners that Renew World Outreach had introduced us to, using the audio player from MegaVoice. We had collaborated, and obviously, Jesus was at the center of it all. That's how you begin to see that God has not called us to do this on our own,”  reflects Waindi.

Currently, In Touch Ministries is looking to find new partnerships in Europe to learn how to utilize their discipleship materials effectively in European contexts. In Touch desires to work together with organizations that can translate In Touch’s training materials into the languages of various diaspora groups or audio devices for older individuals to listen to their materials.
